When I was still doing wedding photography I was Michelle and Chris’s wedding photographer. It is every photographers hope that once they have done a shoot with a client, that they are so pleased with your work that they call you back for more shoots later on. I was thrilled to receive a call from Michelle when she was pregnant! Not only is this couple gorgeous, they are friendly, kind and amazing parents already! Michelle had a tough time with her labour having complication after complication but it was worth ever ounce of hardship once she laid eyes on her precious son Alex. Mich and Chris, you guys are going to be the most spectacular parents little Alex could ask for and I wish you all the love, laughter and light that future has to offer. Have a squiz at their handsome little boy Alex!

Meet Aviva Shapiro!

What a tiny little precious bundle! After many feeds, a boiling hot room and much preparation, her parents (Lauren and Warren) and myself managed to get the most amazing pics and poses from this shoot! Aviva was an absolute darling and slept like a dream once we got rolling! So peaceful and so delicate. I’m blessed to have such dedicated and enthusiastic clients and lets not forget the most adorable models to work with! I just love this family! They have the kind of home I grew up in… full of kiddies, fun, craziness and loads of laughter! Every time I go to their house I am made to feel at home and at ease. I know I am comfortable in a clients home when I can kick off my shoes, have a 10 min coffee break whilst sitting on their bed cross-legged and chat away for a bit. I can only wish the Shapiro Family a lifetime of happiness, joyful surprises and never-ending blessings.

I have so many moms speaking to me before a shoot with such fear and anxiety that their baby wont deliver on the day of the shoot, that the baby will be grumpy and tired throughout the shoot.

Well I like to say to them that they have nothing to worry about. Every mommy thinks their baby or family was the worst on the day and this is more often than not, completely incorrect. A professional photographer should understand the hiccups and delays involved with working with families and children. Babies are so unpredictable and this is not the babies’, moms or photographers fault but purely the nature of the game. Most babies that are absolute angels and sleep through the night and have regular feeds will end up being niggly on the day that you need them to “behave”…. any mother will be able to testify to this.

A professional photographer should:

  • Be prepared for anything!
  • Not rush you or the baby/children as it only makes the situation more terrifying for all parties involved.
  • Allow more time than needed incase their is a delay of any kind.
  • Not be pushy, unpleasant, irritable or show signs of nervousness whilst dealing with clients.
  • Be helpful and offer to assist in the situation. If the photographer is hesitant/nervous to pick up a baby or make friends with a child then they are not cut out for this particular area of photography and it will most probably show in their work.
  • Make suggestions and provide a creative platform for you to think out the box and want new, unique and exciting ideas for your shoot.
  • Maintain a standard of transparency with their clients but also ensure complete confidentially. If your photographer is talking badly about other clients to you then they will probably do the same about you to future clients.
  • Know when they are in the way or whether they are being useful in a stressful situation.

Here’s a few things that most babies and families do on photo shoots to make you feel more normal on your next photo shoot…

{babies} Cry…. alot…

{babies} Make at least one poo in their nappy while they are being positioned/posed…

{babies} Wee on the photographers blankets and props when you take their nappy off…

{babies} Refuse to sleep for the entire 2hour shoot…

{babies} Have scratches on their face from their little nails the morning they wake up for the shoot…

{babies} Flop out of position just before the photographer is ready to take the photo…

{babies} Burp up milk all over the photographer when he/she is being moved or lifted into a new pose…

{families} Argue about one persons outfit not matching everyone else’s or about someone not smiling properly…

{families} Have at least one person who doesn’t want to do the shoot or go along with the ideas given to them…

{families} Often one of the girls will wake up feeling very self conscious about a pimple that came out of nowhere on the day…

{families} One family member will steal the show and want to do a re-take from many different angles until they are happy with how they look…

{families} There’s almost always someone who messes/spills something on their clothes half way through the shoot…

{families} A mom will have to moan at her sons a few times “to behave” … “sit still”… “smile nicely”… “stop chewing your sisters arm” … “just one more picture and you can watch BenTen”

A professional photographer should be prepared for these situations… One thing to remember is that families are just families… everyone has the same sort of troubles and no family is without its hiccups. A professional photographer should see it this way and not be judgmental, no matter what the situation is.  I don’t even notice half of these things anymore as it seems so natural to me after working with so many families.

I love photographing babies/children/families… I really do… And I strive to make every family feel at home during their photo shoot.

Your photographer should make your photoshoot as fun as possible and not sweat the small stuff. A blanket can easily be cleaned, a baby can easily be rocked to sleep, and a little tension can quickly be diffused with a joke or a funny face… All these experiences give your family character and it translates very well on camera… your photographer should make it work, no matter what.

So don’t fear in advance about your baby/family performing on the day of a shoot…

I did a preggy shoot for Debbie and her husband Avi a few weeks ago. Debbie knew right from the beginning that she wanted to do a shoot with lots of trees and she liked Botanic Gardens, having done many many many shoots in the Botanics I was a little hesitant but no one can deny the beautiful backdrop it provides for photographs so we went with it. Debbie is so stunning and so little, she made my job as photographer pretty easy. What a pretty little baby bump she has! Makes me super broody! Here are some pics from their shoot… have a squiz…

Debbie gave birth to the most amazing little girl yesterday morning, weighing in at a teeny tiny  2.7kgs.

Wishing the Langes a hearty mazeltov on the birth of their first child/daughter and may you have heaps of nachas in the years to come!

Baby Sivana Leah Stout was born on the 22 May 2012 and is the first child and daughter of Jess and Jason Stout… She is  just too gorgeous and I got such pretty little moments of her! But boy-o-boy did she make me work for it! Shame, this little pumpkin and her mommy weren’t well on the day, and it was one of the more difficult shoots I’ve done but we all made the best of it and I got the most amazing images from it!

To my dear friend Jess and Jason, I hope Sivana brings you a lifetime of love, laughs and “nachas” :) Love to the 3 of you !!

Two dear friends of mine, Kendal and Jacques were here from the UK for Jacques’s sisters wedding(which I also photographed) and we didn’t want to miss this opportunity to do a little baby bump preggy shoot! These two(or should I say 3) are hysterically funny and made my job very difficult to take seriously! haha… PIP(person in progress) is going to be a girl and I have already informed them that choosing the name “Taetim” would be just fine by me :) haha… Here are a some pics from the shoot.. xxx

Carey and I go way back from my school days. We met through mutual friends and she has always been keen to help me out by modeling for me when I had fashion assignments at varsity. Who would have thought that years later she would be one of my clients! And precious one at that! before this shoot I had never been up to Summerveld and didn’t know much about it either.  But driving into Summerveld was simply breathtaking! The fresh(chilly) air and the open fields left me extremely jealous that she gets to wake up in this environment every morning! I was like a child in a candy store! Not knowing where to look next! Carey was almost full term with just a few weeks to go and she is still so little! Unfortunately for me, when I have a baby I reckon I’ll triple in size! hahaha!

Carey is going to make the most divine mum to her little boy Astin Lane! Congrats hun! Over the moon for you! xox
