jess in hospital jess and simon

I received some horrible news not too long ago(9th Feb 2013) when my sister called me from the hospital emergency rooms saying that she was there with her close and long time friend Jess who had just suffered a terrible seizure. Many things have happened since then and it’s all happening very quickly… Simon Nicholson(Jess’s hubby) has set up a page and is asking for donations… something that is not easy for anyone to do, but a true mans character lies in his ability to know when to ask for help… Here is what he has to say on his online page:

“In my lifetime I have been challenged with a few frightening situations. Like being caught inside at 15 foot Pipeline, like being hijacked with shots fired,  armed robbers breaking into my house, being held up at knife point in the street.

Nothing comes close to the terrifying sight I saw on Saturday the 9th of February 2013 when my wife and soul mate, Jessica, suffered a massive seizure out of the blue. The timeline of events that followed has left me here … Sitting next a hospital bed in neuro ICU eight days later, while Jess recovers from brain surgery.

Turns out she had a brain tumor… And because it was on the dominant left hand side of the brain, it ruptured, causing the seizure, causing us to rush her to hospital and have a CT scan. That seizure it turns out, saved her life. The tumor, a grade 4 glioblastoma, would have quadrupled in the following months, and left me without my best friend, and a mother for our most beautiful special kids.

I thought I had life all figured out, had the t’s crossed and the i’s dotted.

I didn’t.

My first mistake was that I have taken this incredibly special family for granted. I can do better, I want to do better.

My second is that I underestimated the value of having complete health security for my family. I have medical aid, but it’s not comprehensive, and as it so happens there is a shortfall.

Furthermore Jess is an incredibly driven, motivated, self employed fashion designer. Unfortunately the tumor was highly malignant, which means she is heading into a few years worth of Chemo and radiation starting immediately. That means life must change for us. Jess needs to focus all her strength into fighting this cancer, and that means we need help, and despite my pride and being brought up to stand on my own two feet, I want my wife to be around more than any of that.

So this is me asking for help, to cover the shortfall , to build a support structure, so Jess can get the care she needs, and keep our family together. “

So ladies and gents, we are asking for you all to please head on over to this page www.gofundme.com/jessgetwellsoon and give a little so Jess can gain a lot. Even if its $10 , which works out to R88,75 (roughly the price of a beef burger, chips and a beer/glass of vino at your local hangout)… come on friends, lets get involved! I encourage as many people as possible to pass on the details and to please make a small donation… every bit helps!

Thanks everyone

I’ve been asked by quite a few clients as to how they can display the photos from their shoot. Most of them want fun, unique and different ideas to really showcase their photographs but also express a little bit about who they are and to match their home which is right up my alley, others like the conventional/traditional approach that photographs belong in frames and are to be hung and the correct eye level and evenly spaced apart which is also divine if placed in the right spot and you have a minimalistic/modern home with clean lines / colonial look and feel. Both are great but personally I love to experiment with displaying photos in my own home as it attracts peoples attention and draws them nearer to your photo’s to have a little peek at your memories.

Whilst searching on the net for inspiration I came across some rather P-INTERESTING ideas and I thought I’d share some of the photos that I found on Pinterest.

*It is important to note that these photographs were not taken by me and the rights to these photographs belong to their rightful owners/creators. Please don’t use these images unless you have permission from the rightful owners and/or you give the creators credit*  No one likes a thief…. fact.

Please enjoy the collages I have put together and I hope that you gets some fun, unique and fresh ideas to incorporate into your home!

Now I have always had a keen interest in the arts… all sorts of things have made me tick over the years… dancing, music, drama, paintings, photography, sculpture, and many other things of a more visual nature…

Recently… and by that I mean over recent years I have developed a love for literature…. writing, reading, poetry… pretty much “words” in general.

I have found that when I cannot visually capture my vision, I can very often describe it in a way that engages people. I suppose it really started with my tertiary studies(believe it or not there is ALOT of research and writing involved when you study photography or any faculty of arts for that matter).

Firstly you have to be inspired…. but where does one start with that? So I started to research inspirational photographers/artists/people of the past century to get inspiration for my work. Then you have to delve deeper into WHY these particular pieces inspire you. This is a whole chapter of its own and I could write an entire thesis on this matter alone. So one thing leads to another and when you start to break things up and analyse what it is you want to do, what are actually doing and why you want to do it, you often find that through this process and journey you uncover a whole new world of opportunities that were never even an option before.

This is extremely healthy for you! Some people might knock the process by saying that you are wasting your time or that you have no idea what you want to do so you are just stabbing in the dark in the hope that something will work out for you. While this might be the very harsh and real opinions of some people… I couldn’t disagree more.

I call it = GROWTH.

If you are driving and you never look sideways to see what surrounds you you will most likely never be able to find your way back. But if you take notice of things around you and explore a little bit, not only will you able to find your way back the same way BUT you will have equipped yourself with the necessary survival tools to be able to recognise when you are in an area that is not right.

Now to put this in terms of what we are discussing here:

If you go through life in one direction… head down and only focussed on one particular field, and you fall off the bus or have a sudden realisation after 20 years in the industry that this is not for you, you will probably be lost for a very long time with no inkling as to where to go from here, what other options you have or what else you even have an interest in.

But if you explore the avenues around you on your life journey, you might actually come across a multitude of opportunities and experiences that could lead you down a very different yet happy path.

SIDE NOTE : This does not mean that you should just aimlessly skip through life taking on every random task that comes your way… this blog post is not meant to throw you completely off track of all your life long goals….

It is simply to say:

Do everything with thought and purpose, invest yourself in the small things as well as the big things, allow yourself to be open to new perspectives and ideas and don’t underestimate the process of anything… its a process for a reason… there are no shortcuts.

So to wrap up what I mentioned initially… I was put in a situation where I was studying photography but was expected to write thesis’s and dissertations, and instead of just doing enough to get by and pass my exams, I invested myself in the process, and actually loved it. Which is what lead to me blogging and having my photography business simultaneously…

You see, I’m living two of my dreams instead of one… all because I grew one interest to feed another..

Have a Thoughtful Thursday everyone!

Good Friday everyone!

So I’ve been thinking lately about all the things I’ve done and all the things I’m still dying to do and I realised how much of my time is taken up by thinking of weird and wonderful things.

I am one of those people who needs to sleep with a note pad next to the bed (now progressed to my cellphone) to be on standby for the 3am thought bubble that lingers around until I am in a deep sleep and then pounces on me like cat does to a flying ant. It’s impulsive and quite annoying actually… it forces you to jump up, grab something to write with and jot down the idea, sometimes in brief, sometimes in great detail…. more often than not when there is lots of detail I cant read half of it anyway as my handwriting at 3am is not pretty by anyones standards.

You then feel ridiculously relieved… almost as relieved as you’d feel making it to the loo after holding a full bladder for a 3hour road trip and managing to not wet your broeks.

And then you fall asleep… as if nothing happened.

Now this wouldn’t ordinarily  be a problem if I got the required amount of sleep in every night, you know, like a normal person who lives by the minimum 8hour rule… No-no, I get to bed at approx 1am on average if i’m lucky and so I get about 6hours sleep… sometimes 4hours if I’m editing.

These thought bubbles seem to becoming far more frequent and I cant help it. But I must admit… its what keeps me going. I’ve ended up doing all sorts of things from making nifty little doorstops, cushions, origami birds and making cute craft kits, painting all my furniture random happy colours, designing personalised gift tags, eco-pots for plants made from fabric, re-arranging the entire house until it “feels” right, brewing up delicious recipes to test on friends and family, beading jewelry, making key rings, painting on canvas, brainstorming new business ventures for friends and contacting them with my ideas first thing when I wake up…. these are just a few to mention or else you’ll be reading this post until monday morning.

For some this can be quite exhausting and it can be at times but its the price one pays for being a creative.

Now don’t get me wrong, creativity also needs to be fueled with just the right amount of caffeine and inspiration from other people around you. It doesn’t just happen. It’s a strict discipline that you need to nurture, develop, mold, channel positively and translate appropriately. It can just as easily become extremely destructive if not managed and especially if you are not aware of what you are doing at all times.

I find it’s helpful to set these ideas in motion, get it out of your system. and then they don’t have time to grow into the kind of beasts that consume you. Being consumed by something can be both a good and a bad thing but it’s hard to decipher between what is positively affecting you and what is wasting your time when your head is so far in it that you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

So today I’d like you to take a moment to think about all the creative things you’ve wanted to do, refine your idea into something simple and effective and actually get going with it. It’s liberating and opens up your mind to new things. Sort of like having a mental spring cleaning if you will. The longer you harbour old thoughts and ideas, the less capable you become of doing new things, experiencing something fresh, exciting and eye-opening.

You have to give your mind soul food to feed off and it will prosper!

On that note, Spring is around the corner and I woke at some silly hour this morning and thought of nature, greenery and  flowers… so here’s some of the pics I took in the garden this morning… enjoy!

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

xoxo

Having been faced with many joys and many sorrows in the past few years here are a few things I have learned….

I’ve learned … That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I’ve learned … That when you’re in love, it shows.

I’ve learned … That just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day!” makes my day.

I’ve learned … That being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned … That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.

I’ve learned … That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act silly with.

I’ve learned … That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned … That being part of a big family with lots of siblings a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I’ve learned … That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned … That money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned … That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned … That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I’ve learned … That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I’ve learned … That growing up, not time, heals all wounds.

I’ve learned … That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people who are genuinely happy for me.

I’ve learned … That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned … That life is tough, but I’m tougher.

I’ve learned … That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you pass up on.

I’ve learned … That when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned … That I wish I could have told my gran that I love her one more time before she passed away.

I’ve learned … That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I’ve learned … That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I’ve learned … That I can’t choose how I feel or what happens in life, but I can choose what I do about it.

I’ve learned … That it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life-threatening situation.

I’ve learned … That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

I’ve learned … That my first idea is always my worst one.
Have a wonderfully Thoughtful Thursday everyone…

(pls note that some of these sayings are exactly that, sayings… things I’ve heard and seen over the years and they resonated with me during my journey of self discovery. But for the most part all of the personal bits are in my own words and is deeply heartfelt. -pls do not copy this or quote this as your own work… honesty is the best policy)

So I’ve finally admitted…. I’m addicted to blogging! I have decided to blog some each day of the week…. well, monday to friday at least…. and here’s what you can expect each day from me:

Moaning Mondays- Because I’m only human and I too have things I would like to vent about…. Most photographers mask their moaning with a motivational shell and in actual fact are just complaining about something in the industry, other photographers or simply just some area of their working environment that they are fed up with…

I guess, this either makes me brave or stupid to be straight up with the world and flat out just whinge about stuff! so mondays will be my day to just complain… hopefully some other photographers/people will also have the same gripes and will feel a little better to know that they are not alone… x

Tasty Tuesdays- besides photography…. I love love love food, cooking, baking, watching the food network and all things yummy and delish! So…. Tuesdays will be a day for me to put up a recipe of mine to share with everyone…. and even better…. its free…. luthu…. gratis! yay for all the foodies out there!

Wordless Wednesdays- will be dedicated to just a photo…. something i’m working on at the time…something I’ve done previously but still lingers in the back of my mind and my hardrive… without all my typed ramblings and so on… So if you cannot handle reading what I have to say…. well folks, Wednesday is just for you!  ;-)

Thoughtful Thursdays- I will be posting all sorts of inspirational stuff… pics, articles, quotes,… some from me…. some from google…. and some from other peoples/photographers blogs… Yes I will credit them… I don’t steal…. thats just mean and lazy…

Foreign Fridays- This is an opportunity for me to blog about anything…. absolutely anything… could be something crazy like whether poodles have been discovered on Venus…. or something not so ridiculous about an awesome little coffee shop thats opened up…. It’s an open space for me to just write and take pictures outside my commissioned work…

SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS are “me” days ;-) two days a week that I wont be sharing with my bloggers… but will be back again every monday ! So there is a reason to check in at least once a week… Looking forward to  sharing with you all very very very soon!

Have a super duper day!

So Nadia from Cupcake Couture (a creative genius) called me up and booked me to take pics for City Press Newspaper… The article is centered around young working LOCALS who have interesting careers and fabulous style… So when Nadia told me this I said…. UMMMM YA! I was super keen to take part! We shot a Brett Florens’s studio in durban north and the day turned out to be really relaxed with an atmosphere to soak up and enjoy. It really didnt feel like work… well I guess taking photographs never really feels like work anyway but this was particularly chilled. The make-up artist on set was Candice from PlayPlay Creations (a make-up guru) who is taking SA by storm. I know Candice personally from many many many moons ago so it was also nice to catch up and touch base again.

” “Sunday morning. A coffee. Croissant. And City Press. Now Sunday’s have become even better – with the launch of i, a weekly lifestyle magazine supplement to the newspaper. iMagazine is a large-format, high-quality, picture-led magazine, with a sophisticated design supported by solid, smart editorial. - Clare O’Donoghue, Content Director”

So here are a few sneaky pics from behind the scenes… once the article is published I can put the end product up for all to see! Have a squiz!

Over the years my keen interest in people has only become greater… I cannot get enough of people… I love to meet new people, learn about what makes them tick and be able to express that using the tool I find the most inspirational… photography.

A few years ago I took this picture of a well known Durban-based photographer, dear friend and  mentor, Jacki Bruniquel… It always sticks in my mind and I keep going back to this picture for inspiration. It was one of the first projects that I took on that was entirely what I want to do… not influenced by my studies or by other photographers work. I took these picture to show what Jacki is all about, what she loves, what she does for a living, and all the elements that consume her life. Because people are made up of so many different things that make them who they are, one ordinary image of them can sometimes not give people a full understanding of who you really are. The things that get you out of bed in the morning and the events of your life that play a big part in the person you are today.

If you look at these pics long enough you will start to find all sorts of things that you didn’t notice at first… you might even discover that you have something in common with her.

I get such joy and satisfaction from doing character portraits… It gives people a chance to gather bits and bobs of their lives together to be strategically placed in a photograph that encapsulates who you are… where you have been… what you have become.. Its an extra-ordinary experience in itself… and I get to witness it first hand.

Its not often we get to sum up our lives… sit back and evaluate what it is that we have, what it is that we have lost and what we have overcome. The things that make us stronger… the things we cannot resist. All of which play an instrumental part in our PERSONALITY MAKE-UP. Some of us lead very busy lives and others… well not so much… but that doesn’t mean to say that one person has more to offer the world in terms of heart, spirit and character. Which is why character portraits have always fascinated me..

A stay-at-home-mom could do a shoot with me that entails cooking recipes, cleaning apparatus, family photographs, bills, books, piles of fabric, sewing machines, yoga poses and she might love to sing for instance so we’ll throw in some old vinyl records and some music sheets.  (this is obviously just one example of a stay at home mom that I know so please don’t think I am stereotyping).

And on the other end of the spectrum a business man could do a shoot with me that entails a laptop, many cups of coffee, a set of golf clubs, a gym towel and water bottle, a picture of his fiancee and dog, his favourite Sharks jersey, some old concert tickets from his varsity days and a book on inspirational quotes that have kept him motivated from his early teen years at boarding school. (again… not trying to generalise or turn this fellow into a stereotype)…

I’m sure you get what I am going for here…

I invite you all to think about the things that say something about you, take a stroll around your home, peek through your drawers and give me a call to book your very own character portrait! You might not get this opportunity again soon… and before you know it… you’ll be consumed by life.
